Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to what patients and parents commonly ask. For advice about your own eyes, book an examination.
How often should a person with diabetes get an eye check?
At least once a year, even if your sugar is controlled and your vision seems normal. People with type 2 diabetes should have their first dilated eye exam when diabetes is diagnosed. Your doctor may advise more frequent checks if changes are found, or during pregnancy.
Can diabetes damage my eyes if I can still see clearly?
Yes. In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy usually causes no symptoms. By the time vision blurs, damage may already be advanced. A dilated eye exam can find it before you notice anything.
When should my child have their first eye check?
Babies' eyes are checked at birth and during early check-ups. Every child should have a vision check between ages 3 and 5, before starting school, and sooner if you notice a turned eye, squinting, or holding things very close.
Will my child grow out of a squint?
No. A true squint does not go away on its own. Without treatment, the brain can start ignoring the turned eye, leading to lazy eye (amblyopia). Treatment works best when started early in childhood. Occasional crossing in newborns under about 4 months can be normal.
Does a cataract need to "ripen" before surgery?
No. Modern cataract surgery does not require waiting for the cataract to become "ripe". Surgery is usually advised when blurry vision starts affecting daily life, such as reading, driving or work. Waiting too long can make surgery more difficult.
What should I do if a chemical splashes into my eye?
Rinse the eye immediately with clean running water for at least 15 minutes, holding the eyelids open. Don't rub the eye. Then come to the hospital straight away. Eye emergencies are seen 24 × 7.
What are the OPD timings?
Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with a lunch break from 1:30 to 2:00 PM. Sunday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Eye emergencies are seen 24 × 7.
